blogsy is back

I am back on Blogsy, after a while away, I have gone back to this excellent program for the iPad, you might ask why I went away, simply because I was using my Mac so much more, and as I had to travel a lot, I just used the mac browser. But as I work from my home office, my parents home, so much more these days, and the university, I can' see the point of travelling with the laptop, so the iPad is back. also I have moved almost entirely over to Google docs, and now that the iPad has Doc's, spreadsheet,,slides I can work free of the laptop.

besides, the university is both Mac and PC, so I have no need, except for when I need to draw and here if it's the University, I use their Autocad, but there is so much to do here, I doubt I shall have time.

Ok, I can't add the search engine optimisation, I normally do on the laptop, but that can be added later, t he ability to travel light far out ways the problem.

Architectural Technologist – Archoncad news letter

Once a week, Jon Pickup of Archoncad, sends out a rather good review of things he's done or taught over the week, this week I was reading through, and thought what a great week he had, the list is a throwback to some pretty basic stuff, but that so often is the best CPD, his back to basic series offers some dam good advice vi the Archoncad learn site! the videos are part of his Learn club and you have to be a member to read it, and watch the videos.

If your in Birmingham this week, there are several exhibitions on, I will be attending the timber expo at the NEC, on Tuesday, it's the industry major bash, with a lot of great products. I shall be there most of the morning into lunch, so if you see me, say hello.

I want to make more use of timber in my work, I think ash with all it's problems offers a great opportunity for us! as a cladding of detail material.

The photo today is of a small clump of mushrooms I saw whilst walking, absolutely nothing to do with CPD, other than observation, not walking blindly past something interesting, and not recording it for later use.

The real question is how do mushrooms manage to grow here on the side of the road.

Blogsy, my favourite blogging app, has a problem with the new OS for the iPad, it's not a big one, I seem to be getting a crash when I try to add a link to a work, hence the lack o links today, I send a note to the owner on Sunday, and got an immediate reply, asking for more detail, I sent this together with a couple of screen grabs, and got a nice thank you email, now that's dedication to your product.

As there are several ways to add links, I have just used the other, but Sunday and working,,,,,,,,

As for the new OS for my iPad, it took several hours to download last Thursday, and so far all is fine, I like the way it looks and works, and apart from blogsy, all my apps seems to behaving. It has forced on me the front screen login, something I was meaning to do, but never managed to get sorted, and I now get a lot of tweets and other notification on the opening screen, I have these down to what want now so overall I like the new OS, and as far as battery is consented, no change as far as I can see.

Architectural Technologist – Reading, marking and making notes in Kindle

Timber panel and Door detail

I am currently reading stephen Emmitts very excellent book Architectural Technology, in the kindle edition, why Kindle well its one of those choices I had to make, transporting several large books about or my iPad, and the iPad one, I know one day I will regret it, but until then its a great way to read a large technical book.

I found early on whilst reading other kindle books that I could mark up pages or sections of text, and I have blogged this before, here I want. To add the notes field to the argument, because I have just started to use it in a major way, adding comments to Stephens text, way’s in which I think he could improve, and links I want to see, plus my own experiences in dealing with the subject matter, it’s a great help.

Even more so in that logging into the Kindle.amazon.com site I can see the highlights and notes of all my books, and it’s then so easy to get these into Evernote for safe and usefull keeping. I can even re read the highlights and add extra comments on the web site, I like this enormously, it is well worth the effort to highlight and make notes, just because I so often forget, after the page has gone. I tried to add notes to my moleskin and still do, taking a photo of the page from withing Evernote, but this is so much better.

I tried so hard to do this on my small kindle, but for the life of me, I just can’t make it work, so the iPad is the best way currently.

Todays photo is from the Mitchell’s I found in the local second hand book store, and is of a classic panel detail, no other reason other than I like it.

Although the text at the bottom says posted with Blogsy, i did actualy satart this blog within Blogsy, but for some reason it started to go a little wrong when I tried to add a link, so rather than muck about I just saved what I had and went back to the WordPress edit mode, I used to use.

Architectural Technologist – That Odd Character for your emails

I found this site today, it's a site that just has odd characters to copy, so you can paste them into your email or any article on the iPad, there is an app, but the web site has most if not all the bits you would want

I used it to get the ½ text into this blog, and if you need a little rain ☂

www.copypastecharacter.com is the site, the link to the iPad and iPhone app is here to.

The drop down menu on the centre gives more characters, plus the ability to create your own set from the many there.

A carbuncle is just an ugly building

Doorway protection

I am still in Newcastle working at Northumbria Uni, so before work I scanned the mail and news and was pleasantly surprised with the BD headline of Carbuncle awards, you should see some of the examples! Truly not good, but you might be saying just where is the CPD, easy really just look beyond the asthetic design and look at the technical aspect of each nomination, is the detailing good or bad, does it or will it function for the lifespan if the building.

I used this criteria whilst on holiday looking at all the very excellent, Italian buildings from the modern to the very old. In the latter it’s why has it lasted so long, what gave it longevity, and sadley with newer buildings why is it failing.

As I’m away still, with little free wifi I thought I would use Blogsy on my iPad to write this blog, and the more I use it, the more I like it, but unfortunately no standard template, for my google adverts or links I like to include from Zemanta, I did try and upload standard template as save blogs, but forgot this week so no adverts or links.

Architectural Technologist – Another Sunday in the sun and a my first stab at Blogsy

This blog is a bit of an experiment, usually, I write my blogs online via my Mac Book pro, and have a template set up to write with, but as I will be away soon in Italy, and will want to write whilst I’m there, I thought I would get Blogsy out and give it a wirl.

I’ve used Blogsy before, it’s a nice editor for the iPad, has loads of features and access to a lot of my video and photo context, at Flickr. But it lacks one feature and some one is bound to send me an email telling me it’s there, but I want to set up a template, well this trial test blog is a work around. I have saved a blank draft document onto today, which I have loaded into Blogsy, so hopefully this will be in the same format as all my other blogs. We will see.

Today apart from a lot of gardening, very little has been done to the page, I had some notes laid out, to use on a new blog re expanding my thoughts on the excellent work I saw at Birmingham City University, but I’m going to save that till after my trip to Northumbria in two weeks time.

I have done a little more work on the Dictionary ePub book I’m pulling together, I keep finding words and terms to add to it, so hopefully I’ll get it to the stage I can issue it, more again later as it nears completion.

I think I will move the hangout on my google+ page to a Friday morning, I think Friday afternoon is not such a good an idea, perhaps 9:15 AM in the morning will be more suitable for the technologists around the globe. I’ll give it a few more weeks and see.

I’m also now writing on my new iPod that a lot of the features that I can access including the one I’m using now which is the dictate function on the keyboard excellence off about the new link that I have via the Sim card has come in handy couple of times and also the speed of the machine and don’t forget I was using the first version, sometimes it wasn’t that swift but now I’m seeing a lot more improvement in speed

.

Don’t forget, I will host a tech hangout every Friday at 3 pm, call in to chat, moan, find out something, anything to do with Architectural Technology. follow me on Google + “+stevescaysbrook”

Architectural Technologist – WordPress – blogsy and blogging

You might well ask, just what is this all to do with the role of the Architectural Technologist, and again, because this is not the first time that I have delved into this subject, I say, it has everything to do with our job, our research, and our role to communicate.

But that’s not the purpose of this blog, important as it is, you should search though this site for my comments on this subject, the point I want to make here, is the method of blogging I use, for the past three years, I have used, the online wordpress edit mode to enter all my blogs, it’s ok, it works, especially with the help of zemanta to fetch relevant photos, and other like minded stories, I love the calendar app I have, it allows me to forward post blogs for when I am away, or just to busy to sit and type, after all my main job is that of an Architectural Technologist.

in all I could and have lived with it for some time, that is until I found Blogsy, an iPad app that has changed the way I work and blog. This remarkable little program, allows me to work away from my machine, link photos that I want, from not only my Flickr account, but also my google picasa site, where I have both photos and short videos.

Blogsy is so good, i have decided I will use it both at home and whilst on the road, that is if my iPhone can get a decent link to 3G, as the current iPad I use is just a simple wifi model, wifi only.
