A large part of my income is derived from extension work, so when I see an article looking at storage space, my interest is immediate. One of the major points for extending a home is the need for extra space, looking at the family and the existing building and deciding just how to manage their needs to the space available. In the UK many homes are just compact, there is no other way of describing the modern home. So looking at storage space and providing the extra room is important to the client, moving might just not be an option, schools, friends, social and work might all be well established, and moving to a larger house just to disruptive. So adding space is the only option. House plans have great examples of different ways designers have tackled the problem, and its well worth any ones CPD time, just browsing through a set of house plans looking at room relation ships and storage, garage set up. I take notes in my day book, for future reference, or I might even draft out a quick plan. I look for adding space as a dividing wall, blocking sound between bedrooms or a bathroom, or just as an access way, may be a little wider than norm but a great storage space.
