I was with some people last night who brought home to me, the need for a change in CPD given the real pressure on the Architectural profession in today’s market.
Through no fault of their own, they had been thrust into the job market, and were totally unprepared for this upheaval, and wished that they had done some work to allow a more smooth transition. So the conversation went through the various ways they had in the past done CPD, it was the usual, round of lunch time lectures, a bit of technical research and the odd trip to a college to hear a lecture, just making their required CPD, sound familiar, it did to me, but the one thing they all said should have been done was to prepair and keep up to date their CV, together with a small portfolio of drawings and photos of work past done, With the argument of this would have eased the transition, The next augment was what should they be doing now, should they go freelance or try looking for another position, or even change profession. Again this came back to wishing they had included something in their ongoing CPD that would have kept them abreast of the market place. the way freelancers worked and for whom, the tax laws and the legal requirements of setting up a business. But most of all, the mid set needed to be a freelancer, I know that this is the most difficult part as it’s not something to learn, but even so, it was something, they wished had been discussed.
So I think its time to prepair, to look at the job market as a whole, to spend some of your precious CPD time taking stock of the job market. At least making some sort of strategy document, what if. does age make any difference, dam right it does, but until you have to look you might not realise the job choice for a 57 year old is not the same for a 22 year old, believe me.
How and what you look at is down to you, but look, and prepare you should, before its to late.
