As our industry goes into yet another year of uncertainty, we can not ignor the freelance market, both as contractors who can entre a practice and those like me who prefer to work from home using all the power of the net, skype, and google .

The company, which recently conducted a survey of independent workers, said that based on existing trends, there is expected to be 65 to 70 million independent workers in the next decade, comprising more than half of all employees. OK he talking re USA, but what he says apply’s to many other countries, the UK included.

So whats it all about, well it’s where Walter Segal would have gone had he lived longer, its the natural progresion for a simple house structure, made from simple easy to get Plywood, and a technique of jointing that requires no more skill that using Meccano, with simple nut and bolts and ply wedges, Intrigued !, read on.
I was involved, all be it some time ago, with a flat pack sandwich panel to build afordable housing and distaster accomodation, we glued ply and metal to insulation and sent then for erection in containers to parts of the globe, it needed some manufacturing to glue the ply to the insulation and then of cource your shipping air in the form of the insulation, it worked but boy was it exspensive.
But then yesterday I came across the idea of cutting ply panels into simple structural shapes that when assembled formed strong structural frames that were jointed with simple nut and bolts, and assembled together with mortice and tenon like joints that were held in place with wedges. So simple yet so easy to assemble, and best of all, the plans for cutting the shapes can be shipped to a local mill and dome localy, ll that is needed is a supply of plywood, and basic instructions, any carpenter can easily understand the methodology.
The two guys behind it are Nick Ierodiaconou and Alistar Parvin, if I can find them, or they read this blog, I would dearly like to interview them and get more. There is at least half an hou quality CPD just to read and underastand the site and concept, ply the Video and downloading the Sketchup models and viewing them, so I recon at least an hour for this alone, plus some time to expand the detailing, electrics services, and the footing detail certainly needs work, but I like the idea of a Segal post made from plywood, cladding looks open but I quite like a tiles surface, insulation, the list goes on, so in all 2 hours of high quality CPD just for starters.
