Architectural Technologist – Norwegian Dry Stone Wall

Large Scale Drystone Wall

This style of drystone walling is seen all over Norway, large blocks of stone laid dry in more or les a true coursing, I saw many examples of this construction, it’s natural and looks good, I saw examples on both external walls and as a low dwarf wall to an exhibition and reception centre, I have loaded up examples on my flickr account, plus some excellent examples of natural timber roof beams used to support a turf flat roof.

Architectural Technologist – J.K.Rowling & Electronic paper

Now this might seem a little strange, but hang in, there is a point to make here. Watch the video below re what J.K.Rowling is doing with Harry Potter and the very successful books, she has launched a new website Pottermore.com, to promote the electronic version of her book, which she holds all the rights, or so I believe.

But whats interesting to us is the format of the books, I have no doubt that the graphics and the way we will read and interact with the book, the story line and I think her website, will take this medium two steps further on. Why should I include this in a CPD site, well its simple, we have for so long and I mean 1000 + years build and comunicated with static paper plans, even with the advancement of 3D we still produce 2D static plans and realms on notes, Jon Pickup of Archoncad, and I have spent hours of Skype time, talking about how the industry might change, we both have pushed the boundary further with video and animation, don’t forget, Vevtorworks can produce amimation, we did a demo of two components sliding together to show how a scarf joint came together and was wedged.

But our basic medium for instructing contractors and other professionals is still 2D paper, or pdf, we have moved on a little. So the entrance of J.K.Rowling into the fray is worth following, her mind clearly operates at a higher level (hogwarts level,)  watch the films, and stand back and see the electronic paper, way ahead of its day, but now a reality. I recently had to deal with an external engineer who uses Autocad, it took me over an hour to pull in the drawings and make them fit my way of working in Vectorworks, this is not the way forward, a clean interface with full 3D movable interface is whats required. Paper will not go away, but the arival of the iPad and now html5 surely will change all of this, but it might take some work to get Nemetschek to add a better export, of the sheet layer to html for developers to take hold of this and run. I want moveable 3D images, video, sound and links back to the project web site on electronic paper, thats easily read on any html devise, note I have not called it a computer.

J.K.Rowling is a very rich woman, she can afford to push boundaries, and get what she wants, her mind clearly is way ahead, I have signed up on the site for pre release info, I can’t wait, ok I have read all the books and watched all the movies, I’m a major Hogwarts fan, but watch the other news agencies, they are all cramming to find out what she will do, if thats not a clear signal nothing is and we stay still.
